Our intensive one-year Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program emphasizes practical engineering skills and design, equipping students for professional engineering roles, problem-solving careers, or advanced graduate studies. The curriculum explores both molecular and large-scale aspects of biomedical engineering across five key research domains: biomedical instrumentation, drug delivery systems, metabolic design, biomaterials, computational/systems biology, and medical biomechanics. Students access cutting-edge facilities including the Cornell Nanofabrication Facility, NSF Nanobiotechnology STC, Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), Cornell Theory Center, Biotechnology Advanced Technology Center, and specialized programs at the Hospital for Special Surgery's Biomechanics Department. Ideal candidates typically possess engineering credentials in a recognized specialization. The program provides comprehensive biomedical engineering research training, requiring PhD candidates to complete coursework for minors in both traditional engineering and life sciences. Core requirements include a year-long Foundations of Biomedical Engineering sequence, advanced biological systems analysis, additional bioengineering coursework, and mandatory seminars. PhD candidates additionally complete a six-week clinical immersion at Weill Medical College and a teaching component. Master's students fulfill requirements through the Foundations course, seminar participation, and typically four to five supplementary engineering and life sciences courses. Note that program requirements may change.
Applicants are expected to have a bachelor's degree in a recognized sub discipline of engineering. However, exceptional students with a BS in the Sciences and demonstrated knowledge of advanced mathematics, calculus-based physics, and introductory computer science will also be considered.
