This program equips students for professional paths in academia, mainly within psychology, sociology, or human development disciplines, as well as for research roles in government agencies and diverse community organizations or private sector initiatives. Note that it does not provide training for clinical psychology, school psychology, or family counseling positions. Each student collaborates with their Special Committee (chaired by a Human Development faculty member but potentially including cross-disciplinary experts) to design a personalized curriculum and research plan. Statistics coursework at the graduate level may be required for two semesters. The curriculum ensures foundational knowledge in behavioral sciences and comprehensive understanding of human development within familial and societal contexts. The M.A. requires completion of a research thesis. Our graduate program focuses on cultivating researchers for academic positions, government research roles, and investigative careers across public and private institutions. Important: We do not provide instruction in counseling psychology, marital therapy, or family counseling.
The one-year M.A. in Human Development offers concentrations in either Human Development & Family Studies or Developmental Psychology. This intensive master's program aims to enhance research capabilities and strengthen qualifications for students pursuing Ph.D. programs or other advanced degrees where human development expertise proves valuable.
Most successful applicants have an undergraduate major in psychology or sociology, but students of high ability may be admitted regardless of undergraduate background.
