Our PhD program in Development Studies examines development—a pivotal yet debated idea that emerged prominently post-World War II, representing transformative progress aimed at enhancing economic systems and human welfare while protecting ecosystems across local, regional, and worldwide levels. Scholars and doctoral candidates in Development Studies investigate patterns of transformation across social, cultural, environmental, economic, and political spheres, along with the historical and modern influences driving these changes. Their research also explores the institutions and stakeholders involved in development initiatives, analyzing the strategies, insights, and specialized knowledge they employ. As an interdisciplinary domain, Development Studies integrates perspectives from diverse fields such as sociology, economics, political science, human geography, anthropology, history, Indigenous and postcolonial studies, and natural and technical sciences. Doctoral candidates engage in varied research settings, from collaborating with global communities to analyzing extensive datasets or examining institutional frameworks, all to unravel the intricate dynamics of development and its effects on societies and the environment.

The program equips students for careers in research, applied social sciences within government roles, non-profit organizations, consulting firms, and policy institutes, as well as academic instruction in development studies and allied disciplines. To earn a Ph.D., candidates must show proficiency in (1) social theory within development studies, particularly theories aligned with their specialization, (2) familiarity with past and current research relevant to their focus area, and (3) competence in diverse research methodologies, both qualitative and quantitative, with emphasis on study design, data gathering, and analytical approaches pertinent to their chosen concentration.
