To earn a Ph.D., students must complete six semesters of residency and successfully finish one of the following programs (the M.A. is not required for Ph.D. admission). Our doctoral program emphasizes interdisciplinary exploration of antiquity, allowing students to craft a tailored curriculum across six specializations: ancient history, ancient philosophy, classical archaeology and art, classical literature and philology, Greek and Latin languages and linguistics, and interdisciplinary Classics. Key strengths of our program include: Ancient Philosophy spanning Plato to Plotinus and Augustine. The study of Ancient Religion from Classical Greece through Roman Egypt and Late Antiquity. Mediterranean and Near Eastern Archaeology covering the Bronze Age to Late Antiquity and Byzantium (including field research). Scientific Methods in Classical Studies. The examination of Textual and Visual Communication in Ancient Cultures.
Baccalaureate degree from a college or university of recognized standing.
M.A. is not a prerequisite for the Ph.D.
English Language Proficiency Requirement
IELTS Academic - 7.0; TOEFL - The Graduate School’s official minimum sub-scores for each element of the TOEFL iBT are: Speaking: 22, Reading: 20, Listening: 15, Writing: 20.
