The Keyboard Studies program at Cornell provides a Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) in Performance Practice, tailored for accomplished performers seeking to integrate performance with scholarly research, teaching, and writing about specific musical repertoires. Concentrating on keyboard music from the 17th to 21st centuries, this highly selective program accepts just one new student annually to work closely with faculty performers. Specializations include 17th-18th century keyboard performance (featuring instruments like the fortepiano, organ, harpsichord, and clavichord), 19th-20th century performance practices (encompassing fortepiano, organ, and modern piano), and 21st-century keyboard innovations (including digital technologies and new media). While the program has structured requirements, it offers flexibility, with each student's curriculum tailored in collaboration with their Special Committee. Participants may also integrate their studies in Music (covering performance practice, composition, and sound studies) with other academic disciplines at Cornell.
Cornell's Keyboard Studies program strives to merge professional performance training with rigorous scholarship, upholding the university's legacy of musical research, distinguished faculty in composition and sound studies, and exceptional library resources. Aspiring college-level instructors must demonstrate proficiency in both performance and academic musical disciplines, ensuring excellence in both areas. Students are encouraged to engage with Cornell's vibrant community of musicians and scholars, collaborating with musicologists, composers, and peers to blend performance skills with insights from research and seminars.
Students wishing to enroll in the D.M.A. Performance Practice program must have a master’s degree in the major instrument or extensive experience as a professional performer. In exceptional cases a recent bachelor’s degree in the major instrument may be acceptable.
