The Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) major allows students to create customized academic paths that align with their unique interests, which may not be fully covered by existing majors. Students cannot initially declare this major upon entering the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Instead, they typically transition to IDS after discovering their academic passions diverge from their current major and when they've defined clear new learning objectives. Similar to traditional majors, this program requires well-defined educational outcomes and a curriculum to achieve them. However, unlike standard majors where faculty set these parameters, IDS students take charge of designing their own academic plans with guidance from advisors. The coursework should ideally span various disciplines, progressing from broad introductory classes to specialized, in-depth advanced studies.
