In the Fiber Science specialization, students will investigate the physical, chemical, and engineering characteristics of fibrous materials and their diverse uses, spanning biomedical applications, high-performance composites, geotextiles, protective gear, as well as conventional applications in fashion and home furnishings. Alongside core science courses, the program mandates specialized Fiber Science classes and related disciplines. This curriculum offers significant flexibility, allowing students to tailor their studies to align with personal interests in consultation with their academic advisor. Cross-departmental course enrollment within the College and University is encouraged. Many students undertake summer internships, and occasionally winter break opportunities, to gain industry exposure and practical experience, which may qualify for academic credit following departmental internship policies. Study abroad programs, typically in junior year spring semesters, provide valuable global perspectives for future professionals in this international field. Students also have options for independent research or honors thesis projects.
Students completing their high school during the 2021-22 academic year or if they've graduated from high school but have earned fewer than 12 credits at a college or university are eligible for admission as first year students.
