As an astronomy student, you'll develop comprehensive understanding of the cosmos, with strong foundations in physics and math. Similar to most degree programs, research opportunities become available during your third and fourth years - professors and undergraduates have significantly contributed to space exploration, including substantial participation in NASA projects like the Mars Rover missions. Cornell University's Astronomy Major offers adaptable coursework tailored to individual goals. After completing core requirements, students choose between two specialization tracks: 1) The Astrophysics Track prepares those aiming for graduate studies in Astronomy, Physics, or Engineering. 2) The General Astronomy Track serves students pursuing diverse interests or alternative astronomy-related careers like teaching or science communication. The General Astronomy Track's versatility makes it an excellent secondary major option for many students.
Students completing their high school during the 2021-22 academic year or if they've graduated from high school but have earned fewer than 12 credits at a college or university are eligible for admission as first year students.
