The Department of Art has launched a revamped B.F.A. program tailored for students who view themselves as both creative practitioners and academic thinkers. This new structure merges the art department's immersive studio environment with broader opportunities to explore electives across the university. Emphasizing cross-disciplinary connections, the department seeks to cultivate a generation of artists who will engage with the world as both cultural innovators and thought leaders. Students can design a personalized academic path to develop a sophisticated artistic practice as early as possible. The B.F.A. comprises two key elements: department-specific art courses (64 credits) and university-wide electives (56 credits). Studio courses and seminars cover diverse mediums including: Digital media, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Plus specialized subject areas. The foundational curriculum includes six introductory studio classes across various media (drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and digital media) paired with an in-depth art seminar during the first three semesters.
Printed materials' versatile nature enables exploration across artistic, design, and scientific realms. Each era of printing—from ancient techniques to modern methods—reflects an ongoing dialogue between creativity and technological progress. The evolving practice of printmaking encompasses both traditional and innovative approaches, producing unique pieces, limited editions, artists' books, digital projects, installations, and experimental forms. Students can study historical print works at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art and Kroch Library while applying print techniques across digital and analog platforms in various fields. The collaborative nature of printmaking fosters a strong sense of creative community.
