Students have the option to earn either a Bachelor of Arts in Information Science from the College of Arts & Sciences (BA-IS) or a Bachelor of Science in Information Science from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) (BS-IS). These two degree paths share many similarities, with the key differences lying in their respective college-level requirements. The BA in Information Science (IS) enables students to explore how information systems are designed and utilized within societal contexts. This discipline examines how digital information is created, represented, organized, applied, and analyzed. Information Science emphasizes technological systems and their applications, adopting an interdisciplinary methodology with diverse approaches.
This program equips students with knowledge about formal models, data, and policy considerations concerning networked systems. Models: Core principles for formally analyzing and designing interconnected systems—studying networks and human behavior through perspectives from economics, sociology, computer science, information science, and applied mathematics. Data: Methods and tools for examining data related to networked behavior. Policy/Values: Ethical, legal, and societal implications of networked behavior and data, along with designing such systems. Ideal for students fascinated by analytical frameworks for online social systems, formal models of human behavior and decision-making, and applying these models to analyze and design digital platforms.
