The Associate in Arts Transfer Degree in Journalism is designed for students aiming to pursue a bachelor's degree in a related field at a California State University (CSU). Those who earn this AA-T in Journalism gain assured admission to the CSU system, though not to a specific campus or program. Transfer students to accepting CSU campuses will need to complete a maximum of 60 additional units to obtain their bachelor's degree. This pathway may not suit students targeting a particular CSU campus, non-CSU institutions, or those not planning to transfer. Certain major courses fulfill both program and CSU GE/IGETC requirements, though these credits only apply once toward the 60-unit AA degree. Requirements may vary across four-year institutions, so prospective transfer students should consult their desired college's catalog and speak with an advisor.
All journalism students at CCC gain practical experience through our weekly student newspaper, The Advocate, and its online counterpart, cccadvocate.com. As a journalism student at CCC, you'll work in an actual newsroom—reporting events, capturing photos, writing and editing articles, handling social media, producing multimedia content, and performing all standard newsroom tasks.
Journalists investigate and communicate significant issues and events to the public. They collect information through research, direct observation, and interviews with knowledgeable sources. After analyzing this information, they determine the story's focus and presentation. Finally, they write, produce, edit, and deliver the content to audiences.
