Columbia University's Oral History Master of Arts Program stands as the nation's pioneering initiative of its type - a one-year interdisciplinary MA program that equips students with expertise in oral history methodology and theory. By documenting, preserving, and examining personal, communal, and organizational histories, we elevate crucial firsthand accounts that shape collective memory for future generations. Our groundbreaking program merges scholarly rigor with practical training. Scholars gain skills to engage wider audiences and generate impactful knowledge, while practitioners acquire research capabilities and deep understanding of our discipline's evolution. Alumni pursue careers across diverse sectors including cultural institutions, nonprofit organizations, media production, creative arts, education, and human rights initiatives. As freelance professionals, they oversee oral history initiatives, conduct interview training sessions, and provide expert guidance to prominent organizations and grassroots groups. Many continue their education through doctoral programs in disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, or journalism, or pursue advanced degrees in law, education, or social services.
Applicants must have received a baccalaureate granted by an accredited college or university.
Applicant must have TOEFL score of 600 on paper-and-pencil test, 100 on the internet-based test and IELTS score of 7.5
