With the recent appointments of John Phan and Lin-Hng Nguyn to its Vietnamese studies program, EALAC stands out as one of the few global departments encompassing all principal East Asian cultures. John Phan specializes in Vietnam's linguistic history, spanning premodern to early-modern periods, covering both oral and written forms. His research highlights the evolving interactions between China and Vietnam, particularly the historical interplay between Literary Chinese and vernacular Vietnamese. Complementing Phan's studies on premodern Vietnam is Lin-Hng Nguyn, the Dorothy Borg Associate Professor specializing in U.S.-East Asian history, who is widely recognized for her expertise on Cold War-era U.S.-Vietnam relations. Nguyn's research examines the complex international Cold War dynamics that entangled both North and South Vietnam during the Second Indochina War. Together, Phan & Nguyn explore Vietnam's interconnected relationships, cultural exchanges, and regional influences across East and Southeast Asia, advocating for an interregional perspective in Vietnamese studies.
