Financial engineering (FE) is a multidisciplinary domain that leverages advancements from financial economics, applied mathematics, operations research, statistics, and computer science. Its wide-ranging applications have transformed financial practices, particularly in derivatives valuation, investment strategies, and risk mitigation. These real-world implementations continue to generate fresh challenges for FE research. Recently, the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics has propelled financial technology (FinTech) to become a vital component of FE. IEOR provides a dynamic research ecosystem with unparalleled FE expertise rarely matched by other institutions. Current investigations span diverse areas including stochastic control through reinforcement learning, mean-field game theory, systemic risk analysis, quantitative behavioral finance, and principal-agent models. The department capitalizes on its New York presence by engaging industry professionals for seminars, conferences, research partnerships, and student internships. These industry connections extend globally, as demonstrated by the newly founded FDT Center for Intelligent Asset Management, established through generous support from a Hong Kong-based FinTech firm.
