For over 100 years, Columbia's Chemistry Department has significantly influenced chemistry education in the United States. Before World War II, Columbia University led in academic output, producing more chemistry PhDs and faculty members than any other American institution. In the decades since, while other universities have expanded their graduate programs, Columbia has maintained its reputation for excellence rather than scale. The department operates one of the nation's top graduate research initiatives, renowned for its vibrant academic environment and the dedication of its professors and students. Graduate students primarily focus on coursework during their first year, with individualized plans based on their background and academic goals. Research for doctoral dissertations begins gradually in the first year and intensifies afterward, forming the core of the graduate experience. Selecting a research advisor is a crucial choice, aided by faculty presentations during initial term colloquia. Students must attend all these sessions and consult with at least three professors before choosing an advisor. The program expects all candidates to fulfill degree requirements and defend their dissertations within five years. This approach proves effective, with high completion rates and approximately twenty-five chemistry PhDs awarded annually.
