MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Cape Cod provide collaborative PhD programs in oceanography, along with doctoral, professional, and master's degrees in oceanographic engineering. Physical oceanography examines the ocean's physical properties. Its primary objective is to understand and interpret the intricate movements within marine environments. Key research focuses encompass large-scale circulation patterns, ocean-atmosphere interactions, coastal zone dynamics, intermediate-scale phenomena, and micro-scale processes. Through its partnership with WHOI, MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences delivers physical oceanography programs culminating in either a Doctor of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
