The Physics and Astronomy Department at Barnard College aims to equip students with knowledge of natural laws and core principles spanning classical physics, quantum mechanics, astronomy, and astrophysics. Students can major in physics, astronomy, or interdisciplinary areas like astrophysics, biophysics, or chemical physics. The department's objective is to deliver excellent education to all students (both majors and non-majors), equipping them for diverse career paths after graduation—whether pursuing advanced studies in physics/astronomy, entering scientific professions, technology, education, applied sciences, or healthcare. A key focus is cultivating outstanding women in STEM. Faculty lead active research initiatives funded by NSF or NASA, with undergraduate participation. Every major completes at least one summer of independent research, often extending into the academic year or subsequent summers. Research opportunities also exist externally through NSF-REU programs nationwide. Students showcase their findings during the department's annual 'Senior Talks' each May.
