Students with an interest in philosophy can choose between two major options: philosophy or economics-philosophy. Since philosophy addresses core questions spanning both scientific and humanistic disciplines, many students opt to pair their philosophy studies with other academic fields. Prior to declaring a philosophy or economics-philosophy major, or deciding to combine philosophy with another subject, students should consult with the undergraduate studies director to develop the most suitable academic plan.

The philosophy curriculum provides majors with training in logical reasoning and philosophical methods while engaging them with essential questions across key philosophical domains: epistemology and metaphysics, ethics and political philosophy, philosophy of mind and language, and the history of philosophy. All majors must complete at least one seminar (PHIL UN3912), which offers concentrated study of specific philosophical topics or texts. High-achieving seniors may also undertake an independent research project through a senior thesis.

Beyond the core requirements, the program allows significant customization. By carefully selecting electives from the department's offerings (and relevant courses in other departments), students can concentrate more deeply on particular philosophical specialties such as logic and philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of science, ethics and political philosophy, or historical philosophy. The undergraduate studies director can provide guidance on structuring these focused academic paths.

The Committee on Admissions selects women of proven academic strength who exhibit intellectual voracity and strong potential for further scholarly growth. In addition to school records, recommendations, writing, and test scores, we carefully consider candidates' talents, abilities, interests, and personal history. While admission is highly selective, it is also holistic; no one criterion or score determines acceptance. We consider each applicant in terms of her personal qualities, her intellectual capacity, and the rigor of the curriculum she has pursued, as well as her potential for achieving at Barnard. We review each applicant in the context of her school, community, and individual story.

Barnard's general education requirements cover a wide range of subjects: literature, the social sciences, language and the arts, lab sciences, and quantitative areas. For this reason, you should acquire a strong foundation in high school, taking courses from the core academic subjects: math, science, English, history, and foreign language.
