The film studies major offers an academic, globally-focused program with strong emphasis on writing. Students pursue this major to deepen their understanding of cinema as an art form—exploring everything from technical aspects to cultural impact—prepare for careers in the film industry, or engage in an interdisciplinary blend of arts and humanities.

Typically, students declare this major late in their sophomore year by consulting with the department advisor. Together, they design a curriculum comprising twelve required courses, frequently enhanced by offerings from other departments. Lecture halls and seminars often feature a diverse mix of undergraduate majors and graduate film students.

Beyond coursework, students can enhance their skills through internships with film studios, involvement in graduate film projects, and participation in Columbia Undergraduate Film Productions (CUFP)—a vibrant student-led group that offers hands-on filmmaking opportunities. Graduates have pursued diverse paths including screenwriting, directing, and producing, as well as roles in film distribution, publicity, archival work, and festival organization, while others have continued their education in graduate programs to become educators and researchers.

The Committee on Admissions selects women of proven academic strength who exhibit intellectual voracity and strong potential for further scholarly growth. In addition to school records, recommendations, writing, and test scores, we carefully consider candidates' talents, abilities, interests, and personal history. While admission is highly selective, it is also holistic; no one criterion or score determines acceptance. We consider each applicant in terms of her personal qualities, her intellectual capacity, and the rigor of the curriculum she has pursued, as well as her potential for achieving at Barnard. We review each applicant in the context of her school, community, and individual story.

Barnard's general education requirements cover a wide range of subjects: literature, the social sciences, language and the arts, lab sciences, and quantitative areas. For this reason, you should acquire a strong foundation in high school, taking courses from the core academic subjects: math, science, English, history, and foreign language.
