Columbia University's Department of Ecology, Evolution & Environmental Biology (E3B) was founded in 2001. While we're one of the university's younger departments, we've expanded significantly over the last ten years. Today, we boast a globally diverse student population and strong connections with supporters across Columbia and New York City.
E3B aims to train future scientists and professionals in ecological, evolutionary, and environmental biological principles and methodologies. Our curriculum focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to studying Earth's biodiversity, from individual organisms to planetary-scale systems that support all living beings, including humans.
To foster this interdisciplinary approach, the department collaborates with more than 70 faculty members outside its core team. Numerous professors who instruct, mentor, and guide research students come from other Columbia departments or affiliated institutions. These partnerships allow access to extensive scientific and academic resources throughout the New York metropolitan region. Our faculty expertise spans plant and animal classification, evolutionary genetics, ecosystem studies, population dynamics, behavioral ecology, along with associated disciplines like disease studies, traditional biological knowledge, health sciences, and sustainability policies. By leveraging this wide-ranging faculty knowledge and their institutional affiliations, E3B explores the complex evolutionary, genetic, and ecological connections between all life forms.
