The Earth and Environmental Engineering program equips students with the expertise to assess environmental systems, develop solutions, and tackle engineering challenges for tomorrow's industries.
The Combined Plan represents an academic partnership between Columbia University's School of Engineering and Applied Science and approximately one hundred liberal arts institutions, including Columbia College and Barnard College. This collaborative initiative presents two distinct pathways:
Through the 3-2 Program, students spend three years focusing on liberal arts and sciences at a partner college before transitioning to Columbia for two years of specialized engineering coursework. This five-year dual-degree track awards both a B.A. (or equivalent) from the initial institution and a B.S. in Earth and Environmental Engineering (or related field) from Columbia University.
The 4-2 option caters to students who have earned their undergraduate degree at an affiliated liberal arts college and seek to pursue a two-year engineering curriculum culminating in a Columbia University master's degree in engineering.
As one of America's pioneering dual-degree engineering initiatives, Columbia's Combined Plan exemplifies the ideal engineering education framework. Participants first immerse themselves in humanities, social sciences, arts, mathematics, and natural sciences before concentrating on engineering or applied science disciplines. This structure delivers the optimal blend of liberal education and technical training, producing graduates renowned for their exceptional capabilities. The EEE department actively supports this program, recognizing how a liberal arts foundation enhances comprehension of modern environmental issues within their broader societal context.
