The Art History and Archaeology Department's major program aims to examine artistic, architectural, and archaeological developments through diverse historical, cultural, geographical, and methodological lenses. Courses utilize New York City's exceptional cultural assets, frequently incorporating museum projects and visits to nearby historical sites. Students can pursue majors or concentrations in art history, architectural history and theory, or a combined art history and visual arts program.
Barnard and Columbia provide comprehensive survey courses and advanced lectures spanning ancient to contemporary art, exposing students to various materials and analytical approaches. Small seminars concentrate on specific topics while providing rigorous training in research and writing techniques. Qualified students may undertake advanced research through a senior thesis option.
The program structure supports junior year study abroad opportunities. While approved courses from accredited institutions typically transfer toward major requirements, students must obtain approval from the undergraduate studies director. Transfer credit limits generally cap at 12 points, with petition forms available on the department website. Notably, Art History courses completed at Reid Hall or through the Berlin Consortium are considered Columbia credits rather than transfer credits.
