Students who earn their M.S. degree will develop the expertise and skills necessary to pursue careers in atmospheric science. This expertise is built by completing a core curriculum, selecting from diverse graduate-level electives, and engaging in research under faculty guidance. M.S. graduates are equipped for rewarding careers in private industry, consulting, or government agencies. They may also opt to advance their education by entering the Ph.D. program. Admission to the Ph.D. program requires successful completion of a thesis-based M.S. with a favorable recommendation from the advisory committee. Applicants with thesis-based M.S. degrees from other universities may enter the Ph.D. program directly by following standard application procedures. The program mandates a minimum of 30 semester credits, consisting of 13 required credits (including ATS 693) and at least 11 elective credits from structured 500/600-level courses. With advisor approval, students may take 700-level courses or relevant graduate classes from other departments. The remaining six credits can be fulfilled through independent study (ATS 695). Research credits (699, 799) and audits do not apply toward the non-thesis M.S. requirements.
