Graduate students cultivate an extensive portfolio in their chosen field of expertise. Our graduate programs cover drawing, fibers, graphic design, metalsmithing and jewelry, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Elective courses encourage exploration of diverse mediums, broaden creative approaches, and facilitate collaboration with faculty skilled in multiple disciplines. The MFA program culminates in the creation and showcase of a refined collection of artwork. Throughout this intensive study period, students engage in sustained studio practice and academic research.
The 60-credit MFA curriculum focuses on advanced specialization, with students typically completing 30 credits in their concentration through studio classes, independent projects, and thesis development. An additional 30 credits include art history seminars, studio electives, and interdisciplinary academic courses.
Initial program years emphasize technical experimentation, conceptual development, and art historical research. Students present work in critiques, join open-studio events, and arrange faculty consultations across disciplines. A second-year review provides comprehensive faculty feedback with specialized guidance from primary advisors.
The final year centers on thesis preparation, with students developing written materials and finalizing artwork for display in the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art's annual graduate exhibition.
