The Restoration Ecology Major highlights interdisciplinary learning, research, and rehabilitation of impaired or devastated rangelands and forest ecosystems globally. This program specifically concentrates on renewing these landscapes for diverse purposes, encompassing both consumptive and non-consumptive uses like recreational activities, wildlife habitat conservation, scenic preservation, livestock grazing, and timber harvesting. Covering most of the planet's terrestrial area, these ecosystems make Colorado a perfect location for restoration ecology studies, with its varied rangeland and forest types in close proximity.
Participants in this program will acquire essential expertise and techniques for ecosystem rehabilitation. They'll master methods for managing soil, water, flora, and fauna to execute effective restoration projects for government agencies at all levels, as well as private organizations, landowners, and NGOs. The curriculum provides comprehensive training in fundamental plant and animal biology, relevant physical sciences, key ecological principles, natural resource management, economic evaluation methods, and analytical decision-making. Additionally, students hone communication, political awareness, and interpersonal abilities to maximize their professional impact. Potential career paths include roles such as restoration specialist, soil conservation expert, plant ecosystem analyst, waterway restoration professional, research scientist, industry representative, environmental consultant, and mine rehabilitation specialist.
