The sustainable chemistry specialization is designed for students aiming for careers in sustainability-related fields such as clean energy, eco-friendly materials, environmental protection, and waste management. Since sustainability demands broad expertise, the curriculum covers the social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability while emphasizing their interdependence.
Students in the sustainability-focused chemistry program are strongly advised to engage in undergraduate research. Numerous opportunities exist to participate in cutting-edge research projects under faculty supervision, with access to advanced equipment in both faculty labs and the Analytical Resources Core facility. This includes technologies like NMR, FTIR, UV/Vis, fluorescence and mass spectrometry, vacuum systems, x-ray diffractometers, and more. Research experience is particularly valuable for those pursuing chemistry careers, with many students earning academic credit for supervised projects. Mastering these analytical techniques prepares graduates for roles as consultants, educators, or research professionals.
