The Bachelor of Arts in Music (B.A.) offers students the opportunity to explore music as part of a broad liberal arts curriculum. Unlike the Bachelor of Music (B.M.) program, this degree places less focus on intensive music training while providing more flexibility for non-music coursework. Instead of the higher music credit requirements for the B.M., B.A. students take 21 elective credits in other academic fields. Students must also complete a senior-year capstone requirement, which may be a research paper, creative project, or half-length recital.
Program Learning Outcomes
Recognize, analyze, and creatively engage with musical components including rhythm, melody, harmony, form, tone color, and texture through composition, improvisation, and performance across various styles.
Formulate and support musical evaluations while integrating knowledge and skills across musical disciplines.
Demonstrate understanding of diverse musical traditions, historical periods, genres, and cultural influences.
As part of their comprehensive liberal arts education, Music B.A. students will develop strong communication skills, learning to express ideas clearly in speech and writing while examining cultural, historical, scientific, and ethical topics both within music and across other academic fields.
