The department provides a focused one-year master's program culminating in an M.A. degree. Over two semesters, students complete coursework covering historiography fundamentals, historical methodology, specialized research seminars, and area-focused reading courses. Participants will develop a research portfolio containing two substantial papers. A foreign language proficiency exam is required for degree completion.
Prospective M.A. students can apply for practical training opportunities in archival work, academic publishing (including the William and Mary Quarterly), and digital humanities. Selected apprentices receive modest financial support.
Approximately 50% of William & Mary's History M.A. alumni pursue doctoral studies, while others enter careers in education, publishing, archaeology, and museum curation.
