The Master of Arts in History provides specialized tracks focusing on United States history, medieval studies, early modern Europe, and modern European history (encompassing British, Irish, and British Empire studies). The program additionally includes curriculum covering Asian, African, Latin American, and Middle Eastern historical studies.
Boston College's M.A. program follows a course-based structure, requiring students to complete at least one research seminar while offering the option to pursue a Master's Thesis. While serving as a terminal degree, many candidates leverage this program to enhance their qualifications for Ph.D. applications. Graduates typically pursue careers in education, public history, archival work, and various private sector positions.
Students must have a bachelor's degree and undergraduate course work in calculus, physics, biochemistry, biology and chemistry, including organic chemistry. Applicants whose native language is not English must achieve a TOEFL score of 600 or better (paper-based test), or 250 or better in (computer-based test).
