Our mission focuses on educating students in all aspects of music—including theory, history, world music traditions, technology, performance, and composition—within a broad liberal arts framework. We foster an academic atmosphere that promotes growth for both students and faculty, blending knowledge sharing with creative exploration through research, composition, and live performance. Our curriculum reflects a deep dedication to exploring global musical traditions while maintaining essential instruction in the foundational Western music practices that have shaped American and European artistry.

Each semester, nearly one-quarter of William & Mary undergraduates engage with our department's offerings. We welcome all students—regardless of major—to participate in our academic courses, performance groups, and private music instruction.
