The International Relations program in the Joint Degree Program between the University of St Andrews and the College of William & Mary leverages the unique academic strengths of both institutions. Students will gain expertise in key theoretical frameworks for analyzing global politics while developing an understanding of the international system's dynamics and its pressing challenges. The curriculum draws from multiple disciplines—especially political science, economics, and history—teaching students to synthesize perspectives from these varied approaches to international studies. Coursework addresses subjects like global security, international trade and economics, environmental policy, human rights, terrorism, regional conflicts, and globalization's effects. A distinctive advantage comes from experiencing the contrasting analytical styles at each university—William & Mary's empirical focus complements St Andrews' philosophical tradition. Combined, these institutions provide comprehensive course offerings for a rigorous education in world politics. Every International Relations student in the joint program completes an independent research component, either through a St Andrews dissertation or a William & Mary senior research seminar.
