This Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) program is designed for individuals pursuing a career as professional sign language interpreters. The curriculum emphasizes language proficiency (in both ASL and English) and cultural studies during the lower-division courses, while upper-division coursework concentrates on interpretation skills. Students interested solely in learning ASL without pursuing interpreting careers can still obtain an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Deaf Studies, equipping them for further studies in fields like education, counseling, and social services.
Program Learning Objectives
Demonstrate conversational fluency in American Sign Language matching the proficiency of entry-level interpreters.
Accurately interpret communication exchanges between D/deaf and hearing individuals using both consecutive and simultaneous interpretation techniques.

Acquire the necessary competencies for K-12 environments to achieve a minimum score of 3.0 on both the written and performance components of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).
Evaluate and implement professional interpreting standards required to pass the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf National Interpreter Certification written examination.
