The Deaf Studies major program has two main goals: (1) to provide foundational knowledge about Deaf culture and language, encompassing their historical background and societal interactions, and (2) to equip students for graduate studies or professional roles serving the Deaf community. CSUN stands out as one of the rare mainstream universities nationwide with a complete undergraduate Deaf Studies curriculum, consistently recognized for excellence in deaf-related education. Furthermore, Deaf Studies students at CSUN enjoy exceptional benefits like joining student groups, engaging with over 200 Deaf and Hard of Hearing peers on campus, accessing the largest deafness resource library in the western U.S., taking part in campus and community activities such as Deaf festivals and ASL theater performances, and gaining practical experience through university-approved internships.
