The Mechanical Engineering Department provides a Master of Science program in Mechanical Engineering. Key specialization areas include: Thermal-Fluid Mechanics and Energy Systems, Dynamics, Vibrations, and Machine Design, Robotics, Controls, and Mechatronics, Biomechanics, and Manufacturing. While courses are structured around these five focus areas, students can tailor their curriculum to align with personal interests and professional aspirations. The program offers frequent exposure to real-world engineering challenges and advancements within Northeastern Ohio's industrial and research hub. Faculty and students engage in collaborative research initiatives with organizations such as the U.S. Department of Energy, NASA Glenn Research Center, and industry leaders like Parker-Hannifin, General Electric, and Philips Medical Systems. The curriculum fosters innovation, deepens understanding of mechanical system fundamentals, and equips students with modern analytical, control, and design techniques for mechanical, mechatronic, robotic, and thermal-fluid systems.
Applicants can join the program directly after earning a bachelor's degree or following industry experience. Both full-time and part-time study options are available. Additionally, the Department features an accelerated 5-year combined BME/MSE degree pathway.
