The Master of Arts in English program engages you with the dynamic voices and viewpoints of influential literature, spanning from timeless classics to modern works by authors like Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf, Thomas Pynchon, Louise Erdrich, Toni Morrison, and others.
This program excels in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural examinations of literature and culture. With small, discussion-based seminars and personalized faculty guidance, it cultivates a supportive atmosphere for exploring themes and concepts relevant to your academic journey. You'll collaborate closely with doctoral candidates, engage with academic research, and utilize the extensive resources of The Claremont Colleges. Choose a traditional path by focusing on one literary discipline or create an interdisciplinary approach that bridges multiple fields. You'll develop research proficiency and specialized knowledge to prepare for diverse career paths, including education, writing, publishing, corporate communications, and beyond.

Interdisciplinary exploration is fundamental to the English Department. You can customize your studies in areas like Cultural and Gender Studies, Religion and Literature, graphic novels, and other specialized topics.
You have the flexibility to take elective courses in other CGU departments or across the Claremont University Consortium.
You can also combine your MA in English with another CGU degree program, such as a PhD in Religion. This allows you to earn separate diplomas while applying some credits toward both programs, reducing the total units required.
