Central Washington University provides a Master of Science in Geological Sciences designed to cultivate skilled geoscientists capable of performing innovative and impactful research. This program equips students for professional roles in geoscience or advanced doctoral studies. According to recent alumni data, 90% of graduates work in geology-related positions, while 20% have continued to earn PhDs in the field. The curriculum features a coordinated graduate course series to foster peer connections, enhance research abilities, and offer mentorship for completing the degree within two years. Incoming students participate in Fall field excursions to build relationships and explore regional geology, followed by a Winter Research Methods course that guides them in developing and presenting thesis proposals. Academic plans are customized based on each student's prior education, career objectives, and research focus through faculty advising. Every participant in this two-year program undertakes a comprehensive thesis project.

Qualification Requirements

Admission decisions prioritize letters of recommendation, personal communication with applicants, including interviews and/or email exchanges, and the statement of research interest. We recently eliminated the GRE requirement.
A 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average - GPA - or above (on a 4.0 scale) is required to be academically admissible. The Graduate School calculates the last 90 quarter hour or last 60 semester hour GPA.
A score of 213 or above on the computer-based TOEFL, A score of 79 or above on the Internet-based TOEFL. a minimum International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) academic score of 6.5 (scores should be no more than two years old at the time of application) Submit transcripts from a baccalaureate degree from an accredited U.S. university or an accredited international university where the main language of instruction is English. If English is a secondary language, students must score 550 or above on the TOEFL examination.
