CMU's therapeutic recreation program equips students with the expertise, abilities, and hands-on training required to earn national certification as therapeutic recreation specialists. Through this major, students master techniques for delivering therapeutic interventions and leisure activities to individuals with cognitive impairments, mental health challenges, mobility limitations, substance abuse concerns, and aging-related disabilities. Recreational therapists commonly find employment in rehabilitation centers, psychiatric hospitals, extended care facilities, specialized medical camps, and community integration initiatives. As Michigan's first nationally accredited program, CMU's therapeutic recreation focus readies students for NCTRC certification. Learners benefit from instruction by nationally certified professors, developing competencies for careers in medical centers, rehab clinics, mental health organizations, or residential care facilities. The program culminates with a clinical internship focused on implementing therapeutic and recreational services for older adults or people with developmental, emotional, physical, or behavioral challenges.
