The M.S. in Physics program is a 30-credit-hour degree program.

There are two options available: the thesis option and the non-thesis option.

In the non-thesis option, students must complete at least 24 semester hours in physics, with no more than nine hours in courses numbered below 600. The thesis option requires at least 18 semester hours in physics, including six hours of research guidance, and no more than nine hours in courses numbered below 600. Regardless of the option chosen, all students must demonstrate mastery in key courses such as PHYS 621, 622, 623, 624, 659, and 660, and must pass a comprehensive examination.

The program offers hands-on research opportunities from the first semester, covering areas like materials science, astrophysics, nuclear physics, high energy particle physics, condensed matter physics, and statistical physics. Students benefit from collaborations with leading research institutions, including NASA, NIST, and CERN.
