The Master of Arts program in art history and museum studies maintains the same foundational requirements and goals as the standard art history MA, while incorporating a year-long museum studies course and two guided museum internships.
These internships involve working on a specific project developed collaboratively between the student and museum staff, with approval from the department's museum studies advisor. Although most internships occur at the Cleveland Museum of Art, students may alternatively complete them at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland or the Cleveland Clinic Art Program with prior authorization. The program shares the same core coursework, language proficiency, and examination standards as the Art History MA. Key differences include museum internships replacing the qualifying paper, mandatory enrollment in two semesters of museum studies courses, and a reduced elective requirement of 9 credit hours instead of 12.
