Qualification Requirements

Doctoral dissertations in all programs must be original contributions to the existing body of knowledge in engineering and science. Academic requirements for graduate degrees in engineering are specified by The Case School of Engineering and the CWRU School of Graduate Studies.Students admitted to our Ph.D. graduate program typically have a B.S. or M.S. in civil engineering or environmental engineering. Undergraduate course grades should average higher than 3.0. In previous graduate studies, course grades should be at least a B. The Graduate Record
Examination (GRE) score should be at least 1050 for the total in Quantitative and Verbal sections. International students whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and earn a minimum score of 550 if paper based, 213 if computer based, or 80 if internet based. The IELTS is also acceptable, the minimum score is 6.5.
