Political science examines governance, individual actions, and institutional conduct in the public sphere, international relations between countries, and political theories. This field tackles critical modern challenges—such as conflict, economic disparity, environmental concerns, and social inequality—while assessing the strategies, policies, and frameworks developed to address them.
The subject is commonly divided into specialized areas: U.S. government and politics, covering legal systems, bureaucratic operations, and policy development; comparative politics, focusing on governance structures outside the United States; international relations, which analyzes diplomatic interactions, conflict resolution, and economic policies between nations; and political theory, spanning historical ideologies and modern philosophical approaches.
At Cal State San Marcos, the Political Science Program provides coursework across these disciplines, encouraging students to investigate diverse subjects. Students can opt for either a general track, offering comprehensive political science education, or a global specialization concentrating on international systems and diplomacy. Both majors and non-majors are urged to develop analytical, unbiased perspectives on governance. The program aims to cultivate knowledgeable, engaged citizens capable of making meaningful contributions to society at local and international levels.
