This program caters to students aspiring to teach social sciences in California's middle and high schools, or those seeking to create a customized BA in Social Sciences aligned with their interests and career objectives. For prospective teachers, completing this coursework requires passing two California pre-credential exams for admission into a Teaching Credential Program after earning their BA: the California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET), testing knowledge primarily in history along with economics, geography, political science, psychology, and sociology; and the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST), which evaluates fundamental math, reading, and writing skills for future educators.
History serves as the program's foundational discipline, being the most commonly taught social science in secondary education. Students may opt for an alternative core course set or discipline with guidance from an Advisor or Program Coordinator. Additionally, they select a secondary concentration from among five other disciplines: economics, geography, political science, psychology, or sociology.
