The Career Counseling Specialization equips students with essential knowledge, theories, and practical abilities to serve as skilled counselors, career development experts, and consultants across diverse environments—including community organizations, K-12 schools, higher education institutions, private practices, corporations, and government agencies. The curriculum prepares learners to guide comprehensive career development and decision-making processes for individuals and groups, blending personal, social, and professional aspirations. Participants gain expertise in contemporary challenges like career independence, work-life harmony, cultural competence, inclusivity, and continuous education.
These clinically focused programs combine classroom instruction with hands-on learning, featuring a 100-hour practicum and 600 hours of fieldwork. Designed as a full-time three-year journey, students enroll in 9-12 units each semester to graduate on schedule. Admission follows a cohort model, with groups progressing through a predetermined course sequence tailored to their specialization. This approach fosters peer collaboration and networking throughout the educational experience. The program actively promotes professional growth through engagement with counseling associations, research projects, conference presentations at various levels, participation in CSUS multicultural events, and involvement with the Counselor Education Student Society. Faculty mentors nurture both leadership development and research initiatives. The structured curriculum encompasses foundational coursework, immersive on-campus clinic training, personal growth workshops, advanced theoretical studies, and a culminating field placement.
