Civil Engineering applies scientific principles along with mathematical and computational knowledge to the planning, analysis, design, and construction of various private and public infrastructure projects. Civil engineers are tasked with reducing air and water pollution, managing hazardous waste disposal, revitalizing aging urban areas, planning and developing new communities, and supplying water, power, and advanced ground transportation systems. They face the ongoing challenge of delivering these services effectively through the construction of dams, buildings, bridges, tunnels, highways, airports, waterways, and waste management facilities, all while maintaining harmony with the natural environment.
Given the wide array of demands on civil engineers, the undergraduate curriculum focuses on core principles in mathematics, basic and engineering sciences, and the full scope of Civil Engineering practice in both analysis and design. It also includes mandatory courses in the humanities and social sciences to help engineers better connect with the world and society they serve. In the upper division, students can choose 12 units (4 courses) of electives, allowing them to broaden or deepen their expertise in areas such as environmental and water quality engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation, and water resources engineering.
