The Liberal Studies program offers an interdisciplinary major that spans diverse fields of knowledge through a multidisciplinary approach. This curriculum delivers a comprehensive academic foundation that fosters excellence, embraces diversity and inclusion, builds community, and promotes teamwork. Tailored for students pursuing careers as elementary or special education teachers in California or those interested in cross-disciplinary studies, the program's core includes subjects like reading, language and literature, mathematics, natural sciences, history and social sciences, visual and performing arts, physical education, human development, health, and practical fieldwork.
Approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, this major equips future educators with a solid foundation across multiple disciplines essential for effective teaching. In addition to teaching, the Liberal Studies degree prepares graduates for roles in government, public administration, business, management, community service, counseling, law, library science, public health, and advanced academic pursuits.
Given the program's complexity, students must maintain regular contact with an advisor. They are required to meet with an advisor each semester for personalized guidance. To earn a Bachelor of Arts degree, students must complete 120 units and fulfill the University's foreign language requirement. Early academic advising is strongly recommended to ensure timely completion of all program requirements.
