Cal State University Northridge's Music Department provides graduate-level training in both choral and instrumental conducting. Conducting students advance their studies in Music History and Theory while specializing in their chosen field. Choral conducting students engage with Choral Literature, private conducting instruction, and seminar courses while leading major ensembles. Instrumental conducting students participate in advanced conducting classes, private lessons, and perform with and direct large ensembles. Both specializations offer diverse elective options to broaden students' academic journey. As part of their final requirements, conducting candidates will publicly perform and submit an analytical abstract of their selected works. MM prerequisites: Perform three contrasting pieces (selected from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods), including one complete sonata or concerto. Audition requirements include providing an accompanist, submitting a past recital program, and presenting a sample of academic writing (such as a music history or theory paper).
