The 30-unit Master of Arts in Visual Arts focuses on cultivating visual thinking and creative problem-solving skills in art, while equally valuing critical analysis, innovation, experimentation, and perception. Students explore art's historical roots and its cultural, political, and societal significance. They are urged to leverage university-wide resources, including those within the Art and Design Department. Specializations include Ceramics, Drawing, Illustration, Painting, Photography/Video, Printmaking, and Sculpture. The department aims to provide a comprehensive visual arts education covering art education, art history, and studio practice. Students develop an appreciation for visual reasoning and artistic problem-solving while recognizing the interconnected roles of perception, experimentation, innovation, and critical thought. The curriculum also examines art's historical evolution and its relationship to cultural and societal contexts.
The printmaking program combines traditional and experimental approaches across intaglio, relief, serigraphy, and lithography. Early coursework emphasizes technical mastery as a foundation for later personal artistic exploration.
As a flexible medium, printmaking accommodates diverse methods—from historical to contemporary techniques, handcrafted to digital processes, and two-dimensional to three-dimensional forms—often integrating approaches from other artistic fields.
Instruction covers both printmaking fundamentals and contemporary theory to stimulate creative inquiry. Regular critiques and discussions help students develop critical analysis skills and fluency in their medium's terminology. CSUN's location provides access to Los Angeles' vibrant arts community, including studio visits, museum exhibitions, gallery shows, guest lectures, and workshops that expose students to current art world practices.
