The Religious Studies program offers a liberal arts education focused on examining religious traditions through a critical lens. This major serves as a strong foundation for professions that value creative thinking, analytical abilities, effective communication, and cultural sensitivity.
Our department equips students with interdisciplinary approaches from the humanities and social sciences to understand and respect global religious diversity. Learners acquire techniques for comparative religious research and employ these methods across various societal, political, and spiritual settings. The program develops sought-after competencies in critical analysis and written communication, along with specialized knowledge of different cultural traditions.
Established in 1969 at California State University, Northridge, the Religious Studies Department provides options for majors, double majors, and minors. Course offerings span multiple traditions including comparative religion, Eastern faiths, Abrahamic religions, as well as intersections with ethics, arts, media studies, history, cognitive science, and research methodologies. Flexible scheduling with summer and evening courses supports working students in achieving their academic goals.
