The Mathematics Department focuses on education and scholarly exploration. We aim to create a dynamic environment where both undergraduate and graduate students can engage with and conduct research in mathematical disciplines. Our programs equip students for diverse professional trajectories, including academic pursuits, actuarial fields, engineering, climate studies, healthcare, legal professions, and corporate sectors. Graduates emerge ready to take on leadership positions in our fast-changing, information-driven global community.
The Four-Year Integrated Mathematics (FYI-Math) teaching credential pathway is tailored for students committed to this profession from the start. Applicants need qualifying scores for Basic Skills Written Communication and MATH 150A, and should consult with the Mathematics Department's teacher preparation advisors. Starting in their first year, participants join a dedicated cohort with specialized course sections. FYI-Math combines the Mathematics bachelor's degree (Secondary Teaching concentration) with General Education and Preliminary Single Subject Credential requirements. Participants must also successfully complete the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam (UDWPE) and California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). The program follows a structured course sequence outlined below, fulfilling all General Education prerequisites upon completion.
