The Department of Art and Design provides a comprehensive program tailored for students seeking a liberal arts education focused on artistic disciplines. Aspiring creatives enjoy abundant avenues to showcase their talents and secure career opportunities post-graduation. The program allows students to investigate various artistic domains before selecting the specialization that aligns with their passions and abilities.

The Bachelor of Arts curriculum caters to students pursuing: (1) a liberal arts education with an art emphasis, (2) focused art studies, (3) graduate school preparation in art, (4) academic and professional career readiness, and/or (5) art teaching credential requirements.

All Art majors complete foundational lower and upper division coursework. Students then customize their B.A. program by selecting elective courses from one or more departmental concentrations. The curriculum also includes interdisciplinary experiences to enhance professional competencies and career prospects.
Our department aims to deliver a well-rounded visual arts education spanning three key disciplines: art education, art history, and studio arts. The program cultivates visual literacy, creative problem-solving, and appreciation for artistic experimentation while emphasizing perception, innovation, and analytical thinking. Students explore art's historical evolution and cultural significance across societies. Specialization options include animation, ceramics, digital arts, drawing, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography/video, printmaking, and sculpture.

CSUN ranks among premier institutions for animation education, featuring three specialized tracks: 2D Design, 3D Animation, and Game Development. Our cutting-edge computer labs boast industry-standard software and hardware. Situated near leading animation studios, our program benefits from faculty with extensive professional experience and maintains strong industry connections that facilitate internships and job placements. Students gain exclusive access to studio events, educational partnerships with DreamWorks Animation, and collaborations with Seoul Institute of the Arts.
